1. Definition
DRM, which is short for Digital Rights Management is an umbrella term referring to technical methods to control the use of digital content. It is defined as a set of technologies and systems governing the authorized use of digital content and managing any consequences of that use throughout the entire life cycle of the content – creation, manipulation, distribution, and consumption – by preventing illegal copying, imposing fees, processing payments, tracking content, and protecting each principal’s rights and profit.
DRM was first adopted to protect the copyright of MP3 in 2001 by Napster, the leading MP3 sharing service provider. As the digital content market had grown and DRM had get attention, the Jan/Feb 2001 MIT Review Technology Trends listed DRM as one of the 10 most important technology trends.

2. Emergence of DRM
The Internet’s global reach enables the transmission of content on an unprecedented scale. At the same time, cheap, abundant digital technology makes it possible to create and efficiently distribute all forms of content and information in digital format. Widespread Internet penetration, combined with digital technologies, permits anyone with these tools at their disposal to easily make a potentially unlimited number of copies of content without any degradation in quality and to distribute a single copy to an unlimited number of users. As a result, unprotected digital content is extremely vulnerable to theft, unauthorized access, and propagation. The availability of multiple perfect copies of copyrighted materials is perceived by much of the media industry as a threat to its viability and profitability
