Effects of Childhood Swimming on the Prevalence and Symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis
With the recent boost of interest in early childhood swimming training in Korea, questions have arose whether the activity could be a possible prevalence factor for the onset of allergic diseases in childhood. Several previous studies have presented data on the adverse effects of swimming pool chlorination on children with asthma and atopy, but only a few studies exist on the specific consequences of swimming in children with allergic rhinitis, one of the most common allergic diseases in Korean children. As a cross-sectional study, the findings of this study were based on questionnaire responses. The reliability and validity of the questionnaire were established by previous studies, standardized questionnaires such as ISAAC, and through prior pilot testing. Taking into consideration the comprehensive levels of each child, questionnaires were asked to be filled by parents. Of the total of 508 fully answered questionnaires, 295 children were classified, based on the ARIA Guideline, to be suffering from allergic rhinitis. There was a statistically significant correlation between frequent swimmers and the prevalence of allergic rhinitis (p
