What is SAN?
Definition of Storage Area Network
“a network whose primary purpose is the transfer of data between computer systems and storage elements” by SNIA.
a specialized, high-speed network attaching servers and storage devices
DAS (Direct Attached Storage)
Characteristics of DAS
directly connected storage
the easiest way to secure storage
adding external storage appliance to each server connected to network, one can access to the necessary data at a close distance, and can expand it with an ease
connecting additional external storage appliance continuously declining efficiency of the server
if the server has stopped during the process, one cannot use the external storage appliance which is connected to the server either
NAS [Network Attached Storage]
Characteristics of NAS
a file-serving appliance accessed by workstations and servers through a network protocol such as TCP/IP
one solution for the conquest of existing limitation of file-serving
the strong point of NAS is file-sharing
NAS appliances are relatively easy to deploy
the weakness of NAS is Latency Time, it takes more steps taking in connecting and requires more latency time comparing to DAS or SAN.
