1. Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury (Ravi Shankar)
① Introduction
Ravi Shankar is an Indian musician and composer who plays the Indian string instrument ‘sitar’. He is often called the Pandit, means a remarkable maestro in Indian classical music. He is renowned for his pioneering work in bringing Indian music to the West. However, before that, he already stood stand high in the public estimation as a musician in Indian.
Shankar’s music had a huge effect on modern music. Many famous musicians who represent 20th century, like Beatles, were affected mysticism of his music. An impressive comment about Shankar that was told by George Harrison, a guitarist and singer-songwriter of Beatles, shows his position in western music world.

② Shankar’s Life
In 7 April 1920, Shankar was born in Varanasi, a city on the river Ganges in the Indian state of Uttar Prades. He spent his youth touring Europe and India with his brother Uday Shankar, the pioneer of modern dance in India. At first Shankar practiced dancing but he started to learn sitar playing under Allauddin Khan who was most renowned music teachers of the 20th Century in India, from 1938.
After finishing his studies in 1944, he worked as a musical director for All Indian Radio, New Delhi. In 1956, he began to tour Europe and America playing Indian classical music. In there, he achieved renown and taught about Indian classical music in the 1960s. At that time, Shankar associated with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison.
