The Nacionalista Party which was the oldest political party led the country throughout the majority of the 20th century. It gained its power and was dominant political party during the American occupation. This was followed by the domination by a new party known as the Kapisanan ng Paglilingkod sa Bagong Pilipinas (KALIBAPI) during the Japanese occupation during World War II. With the end of the war, Nacionalistas regained its power but a new political party (Liberal Party) was formed. This two party system remained until 1972. This was followed by the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL, New Society Movement), LABAN, PDP-LABAN, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), Partido Nacionalista ng Pipinias, Lakas ng Bansa, National Union of Christian Democrats, Philippine Democratic Socialist Party, and BANDILA.
It is believed that Philippine political parties are not based on political platform. Political platform is known as a manifesto which is a list of actions which a political party supports in order to appeal to the general public. This is the reason why many Philippine politicians are seen as opportunists who are interested in personal gains, and why so many different parties have been created.
Philippines is a founding member of the UN, and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). It is also a member of the EAS, APEC, AsDB, ASEAN, CP, ESCAP, FAO, G24, G-77, IAEA, IBRD, ICAO, ICRM, IDA, IFAD, IFC, IFRCS, IHO, ILO, IMF, IMO, Inmarsat, Intelsat, Interpol, IOC, IOM, ISO, ITU, ITUC, NAM, OAS (observer), OPCW, UNCTAD, UNESCO, UNHCR, UNIDO, UNMIK, UNMIL, UNMISET, UNOCI, UNU, UPU, ITUC, WCO, WFTU, WHO, WIPO, WMO, WToO, WTrO.
Philippines alignment with other countries are based on its foreign policy, which includes advancement of Filipino ideals and values (democracy and advocacy for human rights). Philippines is showing active engagement with regional neighbors in Southeast Asia through its membership of ASEAN. Relations with Vietnam and Cambodia has improved since 1990 and has expanded its trade with Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Historical ties with the US has also had impact upon its international relations. Philippines considers itself a strong ally of the US and has supported various participations in the ‘Iraq War’ and the ‘War on Terror’.
