My lord, do what you wish; but if you approve, after the play ends let his mother the Queen persuade him in private to reveal the reasons for his grief. Let her be forthright with him, and with your permission I’ll be concealed where I can hear all they say. If she doesn’t find out the truth, then send him to England – or lock him up where you in your wisdom think best.

(Act 3 Scene 4)
Hamlet Come, come. Sit yourself down. You’re not moving. You’re not going till
I’ve set up a mirror for you to see your inner self.
Queen What are you going to do? You don’t intend to murder me? Help, help!
Polonius [from behind the tapestry] Help, help I say!
Hamlet What! A rat? [He draws his rapier and thrusts through the tapestry]
I’ll kill it cheap! Dead!
Polonius [behind the tapestry] Oh, he’s killed me!
Queen Oh heavens, what have you done?
Hamlet Really, I’ve no idea. Is it the King? [He lifts up the tapestry and
discovers Polonius lying dead behind it]
Queen Oh, what an impetuous and murderous deed this is!
Hamlet A murderous deed! Almost as bad, good mother, a to kill a king, and
marry his brother…
Queen As kill a king?
Hamlet Yes, lady, that’s what I said. You wretched, rash, intruding fool –
farewell. I thought you were the King. Accept your bad luck. You’ve
learned that to be too inquisitive puts you in danger.

Queen How is my lord?
Polonius Stop the play!
King Turn on the lights. Let’s go!
Polonius More lights, more lights!

“She says this: your behavior has amazed and astonished her.”

You want to play me; you seem to know where my stops are; you want to uncover my secrets; you would sound me out from base to treble. And there’s a lot of melody, excellent sounds, in this little pipe, but you can’t bring it out. Why, do you think I am easier to play upon than a recorder? Call me whatever instrument you like; fret me even; you still can’t sound me out.

Act 3 scene 3
