Seoul Metro

Seoul Metro began operating line number 1 in 1974. When Korea started constructing subway in 1970s, Korea’s GNP was just 300 dollars. It means average Korean people made 300 dollars per year. Korea was very poor country and North Korea was richer than South Korea back then. In fact, North Korea’s subway at Pyeong-yang started operating a year before Seoul subway. Entering 1970s, people living in Seoul were over two million and they needed subway like other countries. The first subway trains only operated from Seoul station to Chungryanli station, which only takes 13 minutes. In the 1980s, line number 2 began to operate and this made many people to move out from the center of Seoul. Gangnam, Guro, and Yeongdeongpo were developed.
There are public etiquette rules in the Seoul subway, such as silent cell phone mode and talking quietly, using your earphones, not leaving your newspapers behind, and not buying any illegal goods. However, many people do not follow these rules. In Seoul Metro, people usually see some people doing a sales pitch. However, they do not have the license to sell. They usually sell cheap products ranging from affordable price thousand won to ten thousand won. Even though the passengers hear the announcement on the train that says “report illegal salesmen and do not buy the products from them,” they do not usually report it to the officer because they feel sympathy for them. Korea went through economic crisis in 1997, and many factories and companies went bankrupt. These salesmen started to appear since the Korean recession. A lot of people feel that these people might be someone else’s fathers and husbands who used to have decent jobs before. It means ordinary people feel sorry for illegal salesmen’s situation.
Seoul subway is very noisy. Many people use cell phones because there are no dead zones in the subway. Also, a lot of passengers talk to their friends loudly. Especially, many foreigners are afraid of confronting elderly women called ajumma because some ajummas do not line up and cut in the line pushing other people. Korea is one of the strongest IT countries, so you will find many people using digital devices such as PMP, PSP, or smart phones.
