Next is function. In terms of function, verbs can function as predicate but adjective cannot. When we express the situation that someone enjoys something, we can make the expression like ‘students enjoy’. However, when we express someone’s state of mind which is happy, we can express not ‘Students happy’, but ‘Students are happy’. Adjectives need ‘be’ verb or other verb in order to make sense. Therefore, they are different in predicative function.
Although we analyzed its two properties which can discern itself from the verb, there still exist some items that belong to both categories. Of course, they are overlapped in every case. In other words, the case that we have to consider is when the verb-form involved is a gerund-participle or past participle form. This is because these verb-forms can occur after be in the progressive and passive constructions. Followings are examples of this case.
a. They are entertaining. b. The clock was broken.
In case of a, the sentence has two meanings due to the ambiguous use of entertaining. When we regard that word as a gerund-participle form of the verb ‘entertain’, the meaning of the sentence is “They are currently receiving guests.” Whereas, if the word is an adjective, the meaning of it is “they are enjoyable.” In this case, to escape from such ambiguity, replacing be verb by seem or become or adding very are recommended.
