본문내용
1.2.2. The Law of Requisite Variety
The Law of Requisite Variety says that the number of different states of a system’s control mechanism must be higher than or at least equal to the number of (possible) different states in the system being controlled, in order to guarantee stability. But in reality, the variety of the environment is larger than the variety of the organization.
Stafford Beer and Ross Ashby (1964) said that “Variety absorbs Variety.” The concepts mean the minimum number of choices that is necessary to avoid uncertainty. It can be used to allocate management resources necessary to maintain process viability. The company has to try increasing their own variety in order to better control the variety of the environment.

Variety attenuators means that we (or like in this case Yuhan-Kimberly) filter the variety of our environment, so we only recognize the things in the environment that are interesting for us and ignore the ones that are not interesting. This happens by means of human physiology, individual endowments, and social conditioning. It is important in business to design variety attenuators, for example by using market research concepts.
Variety amplifiers means that we (or like in this case Yuhan-Kimberly) amplify our own variety to increase our power over the environment. In the case of Yuhan-Kimberly, this means that the company has to be flexible to respond quickly to changing conditions in its environment, for example.
1.2.3. Applying the Law of Requisite Variety to Yuhan-Kimberly
Applying the model to Yuhan-Kimberly, we identified different variety attenuators and variety amplifiers like this:

Lifelong learning
The management provides the employees with lifelong learning opportunities. The company invests in training of employees so that they can react more flexible to changing conditions in the environment.
Market research / Stakeholder analysis through surveys
The former CEO Moon stressed to the employees the importance of accurately understanding the position of not only the company but also of the society and the country and furthermore, the global market. According to the former CEO, understanding the society and the country, and the world in which a company operates is extremely important not only because it is essential for achieving its goal and survival, but also because changes in the global market impact every aspect of a company. Therefore, Yuhan-Kimberly is engaging in stakeholder surveys and tries to satisfy their stakeholders.

“Neway” System
Employees are encouraged by the management to submit their own ideas for reacting to the changing environments. The name “Neway” stands for “new way”, because Yuhan-Kimberly wants to improve the company’s structures and the relationships with the company’s stakeholders by going in new directions. In that way, Yuhan-Kimberly can also save resources on research and finding of ideas, because they get creative proposals from their employees and only have to implement them, if they are regarded as useful. The “Neway” consists of different parts that we are going to explain when focusing on the different systems of the VSM.
