2. THE BACKGROUND OF THE CONCEPTS OF MIS
As mentioned above, Paris Baguette has thousands of franchise stores and it produces hundreds of products. Also, Paris Baguette wants to be a top brand in the world. Therefore it has to manage lots of stores and products, thus reaching for their goal to be the ‘best brand’. In addition to this, PB needs a system which can manage their previous customer effectively as their customer layer is extended and competitors become stronger. For this reason, Paris Baguette adopts web-POS, ERP system and family card system (Happy Point Card).
□ THE CHARACTERS OF PARIS BAGUETTE’S INFORMATION SYSTEM
1. THE INFORMATION SYSTEM OF PARIS BAGUETTE
1.1 Purpose
PB has thousands of franchise stores and it also produces hundreds of products. First, for the PB’s headquarter, management of franchise is important. To reduce shopkeeper’s burden, PB gives franchise a full refund about stock. Headquarter bear the whole expenses from returned inventories. Because of this, new information system could minimize losses. The headquarter has to know how much each store has sold and how many items each store has left in the inventory, and this information can reduce inefficient orders. The company can run delivery system wisely. PB tries to manage the stores & the products effectively by adopting web-POS and ERP system. Also, in shopkeeper’s view, using standardized system is much better to sell products than doing manual labor. As their business grows faster processes are needed. PB needs to get both customer’s satisfaction and business efficiency. Therefore, standardized and organized systems which can deal with plenty of stores and products at the same time are adopted.
With the bakery industry growing, many competitors threaten PB’s position. So, the company has to develop new system managing customer effectively. SPC group which is the parent company of PB also has many subsidiary companies. If PB could use database integrating whole SPC groups’ customers, PB could get much higher competitive advantage in their bakery industry. So, PB and SPC group introduced Happy Point card in terms of one of CRM activities.
1.2 History
PB introduced ERP system before 1999. With an ERP system, PB is able to increase a standardization and systematization. An ERP system can make it possible to supervise the overall processes related to operating franchise stores from raw material management to selling products. Also this system helps to improve the freshness of the products which is a key factor why PB became a number one brand in the bakery industry. Another system named POS also contributes to its success. PB introduced POS system in 2000, the first time in the bakery field. Because a POS system is based on the web, it helps not only one single franchise store’s product management but also gives overall insights at PB’s headquarter.
PB introduced membership card with other subsidiary companies of SPC group, Baskin Robbins and Dunkin Donuts in 2000 when is also the first time introducing this system in its field. At the beginning time, PB used membership card with a few of SPC subsidiary companies. But since they gradually have added and joined other cooperating companies, at present, Happy Point card is the largest family card among point saving systems in Korea.
