Mr. Biggs and Mr. Mason - object to their marriage since it is a bigamous marriage. Rochester's first wife is Bertha whose brother is Mason, the madwoman living in Mr. Rochester's attic.

St. John – admits that he has passion and affections for Miss Rosamond.

Jane - asks why he does not just marry her.

St. John – says that he is very much in love with Rosamond; but he knows that Miss Rosamond would not be suited to be a missionary's wife. He insists that he is a cold, hard man who is not willing to give up his ambitions for God, for love. He remarks that Jane is original and direct in her manner
