IV. Problems of Commercialized Churches in South Korea of Today
We get confused whether the megachurches are religious institutions or enterprises. They justify their wealth by insisting that they use the money for missionary work and growth of community. Their excuse sounds like that huge money is necessarily needed for missionary work. However, there are many poor missionaries who are working in overseas countries. Faith is always prior to the money for a true missionary work. What about the community? Since there is a huge gap between the wealth of church and wealth of community, we can tell that the megachurch often promotes an atmosphere of social disharmony in community.
Previously, we mentioned public’s negative view toward the ATM in church. It is maybe because we feel uncomfortable with a pursuit of convenience in worshipping God. ATM is originally invented for financial business, and offerings and tithes are not financial businesses. These are expressions of that “everything including our body belongs to God.” In other word, it was originally intended to do offerings as a proof that they offer their body to God. So in the Old Testaments, people always offered presents themselves. There is no word in the Bible demanding of an offering system for convenience of people in church. Modern convenience could be used for other goals like missionary work, but it should not penetrate into the worship which is a pure expression of devotion to God.
