Summary

Concept of ‘Economies of Scope’

Economies of scope are cost advantages that result when firms provide a variety of products rather than specializing in the production or delivery of a single product or service. Firms with economies of scope curtail the cost of production through utilizing common platform
There are four methods of economies of scope : M&A, related diversification, flexible manufacturing and vertical integration.

Case 1 Summary

There are three big changes in the airline industry and these are alliance, privatization and empowerment. By these changes, competitions of airline industry become really fierce and this leads the necessities of adopting economies of scope. Hub-and-spoke system, which was implemented in the airline distribution system to take advantage of economies of scope, is widely used. Moreover, we were able to find out that this system might cause not only economies of scale but also economies of scope. Airline industry regards individual flight as distinct product. They use hub airport and spoke airport to reduce cost. However, we can’t easily guarantee that airline industry will easily enjoy this cost reduction. There are high probabilities that economies of scope might turn into diseconomies of scope such as lead time, malfunctioning and environmental issue.
