Ⅰ. Introduction
1) Definition
Human Rights Watch defines "honor killings" as follows:
Honor killings are acts of vengeance, usually death, committed by male family members against female family members, who are held to have brought dishonor upon the family. A woman can be targeted by (individuals within) her family for a variety of reasons, including: refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, being the victim of a sexual assault, seeking a divorce—even from an abusive husband—or (allegedly) committing adultery. The mere perception that a woman has behaved in a way that "dishonors" her family is sufficient to trigger an attack on her life.
That is to say just because drag the name of the family through the mud, It is customary to kill family members.
2) Background
Honor killing is not derived from religion. This is one of the vicious habit of the pre-Islamic Arabia.
By poor surroundings, Because of poor surroundings and climate, Arab had high-risk industry such as nomadic and long-distance trade. In nomadic peoples of civilization based on agriculture, The social position of women in society is extremely low.
In the middle of Asia and Europe flourished trade, the number of men is very important for people. People to ride a camel to cross the desert and other tribes of the area, a number of the men was a very important factor. As a result, they preferred men. For survival of the tribe, men were willing to enter a war, If they win, they kill other tribes and take wealth and women in a common. In this time, most people of tribes realised that women are men's possession.
The men had unique position in the culture of nomadic, commerce and plunder. These environments need a loyal workforce, So the reason is that Arab was consist of family, kinship and tribes.
In tribes relation, tribes society developed trust relationship but hold each other in check. Tribes superiority depends on tribe's military power, credibility and honors. So tribe's honor was symbol of Superiority, the honor comes from individual morality in the tribes.
Members who damage the honor were punished by their tribes. So the tribes prevent from a war against other tribes and preserve their own honor.
