I. Silence
Most Americans regard silence as the sign of uncomfortable. so a word 'small-talk' takes major part of communication. This custom had been taught at the kindergarten. At kindergarten, there is 'show & tell' time which students should ask questions to other student.
But there is some other Silence which is called “Strategic Silence”. It is more effective than word or speech when they express their emotions or claim opinions. We can see these things when Barack Obama made a speech. With silence, audience got impressed and gave him a big hand.
II. Eye Contact
When you speak with American, you should contact his eye. In Korea, during talk with elders, being polite means we should not see his eyes directly. But in America eye contact is the most important thing during communication.
