Ⅰ.서론
우리나라의 교육에 직접적 혹은 간접적으로 관여한 미국인의 일반철학이나 교육사상은 미국의 사회적 그리고 문화적 유산에 의한 산물이었다. 미국을 시찰했거나 미국에서 공부했거나 혹은 각종 수단에 의해 우리나라 사람들은 미국의 교육사상으로부터 영향을 받았다. 우리나라 교육사상에 영향을 준 미국의 여러가지 관전을 1940년대에 이루어진 미국의 교육사상을 분석하여 밝힐 필요가 있다고 본다. 이러한 필요성에 따라 이 논문에서는 당시 미국교육의 상황, 교육이념, 진보주의 운동 및 교육사상의 변천과정을 탐색하였다.
이러한 연구문제를 해결하기 위하여 개념적ㆍ논리적 분석법과 역사적 연구법을 사용하였다. 당시의 미국의 교육사상에 대한 용어를 정리하고 규범적 정의를 내리기 위하여는 개념적ㆍ논리적 분석법을 사용하였고, 1940년대를 전후한 각종 인쇄물을 분석하고 정리하기 위하여 역사적 연구법을 사용하였다.
이 연구는 몇가지 제한점을 가지고 있다. 연구기간을 1940년대로 한정시켰다는 점이다.
교육사상은 시기에 따라 명확히 구분되기도 어렵고 이 기간을 위한 교육이념이 따로 설정되지 않는다는 전제를 고려하지 않았다. 또한 각종 문헌에 나타난 교육사상이 당시의 전체적 미국의 입장을 나타내지 못할 수도 있기 때문에 이들 교육사상을 주관적 소수 집단연구법 등을 통하여 재점검해야 함에도 불구하고 이를 수행하지 못했다.
Ⅱ.1940년대 미국교육의 배경
20세기 이전까지의 미국의 교육은 보통 읽기, 쓰기, 셈하기와 같은 기본 기능의 훈련을 의미했다. 고등학교의 기본 목적까지도 이러한 기본 기능을 성취하는데 있었다. 20세기초반까지도 고등학교에서는 라틴어, 그리스어 및 영어와 그리스, 로마 그리고 유럽의 역사 및 수학을 주로 가르쳤다.
1905년에는 고등학교 학생수 98%가 영어를 배웠고, 87%이상의 학생이 대수와 기하과목에 등록했으며 50%이상의 학생이 라틴어를 수강했고 50%이상의 학생은 근대영어 코스에 등록했다.
