Brief Intro : Intel
The leader in the semiconductor industry is unquestionably Intel. Following Intel’s lead are AMD, Cyrix, Digital, Motorola, etc. in CPU manufacturing. Intel has abandoned memory division back in 1985 as the Japanese firms became more competitive and gained chunk of the world market share. From then on Intel has concentrated on developing microprocessors along with other peripheral IC devices, which are not flagship products but regarded more as the supplementary products to enhance Intel CPU sales. The driving force behind Intel’s phenomenal growth is the market expansion of the IBM PCs. In the early 1980s the sales of Intel 8088, 8086 and later on 80286, 80386 chips inside IBM PCs have exponentially increased as the PC sales boomed. Until then Intel was making the same products that IBM or Compaq has set as the industrial standard. But Intel successful developed 80486, Pentium chip and set them as the industrial standard. It has become the leader in computer hardware from a mere parts supplier.
