Edel says: “In the traditional monologue—in its original Greek sense it was a ‘speaking alone’—the character gives the audience logical and reasoned thoughts. These are ‘structured’ even while they represent inner reflection or reverie, and are rendered without relation to external stimuli.” The great soliloquies of Shakespeare, Edel points out, “are structured monologues in which the mind presents reasoned and ordered thought, the ‘end-product’ of the stream of consciousness, not the disordered stream itself.”
‘Interior monologue’와 ‘Stream-of-consciousness’
문학적 기법의 관점에서 이 둘은 인물의 내면이 얼마나 정돈되어 제시되느냐에 따라 구분할 수 있다. Edel은 비록 이러한 내면 독백이 내재적으로 또는 무언으로(silently) 표현된다 하더라도, ‘monologue’가 갖는 극적(theatrical)함의로 인해 흐름(flux)이라는 개념을 나타내는데 한계가 있으며, 논리적으로 일관성이 있고 정돈된 표현으로 나타날 수밖에 없다고 한다. 또한 Humphrey는 의식의 흐름 소설에서 나타나는 내면독백은 암묵적으로(tacitly) 일종의 관객을 상정하게 되며, 그러한 관객들의 기대를 무의식적으로 충족시키려 한다고 설명했다. 반면, stream of consciousness는 정돈된 이성의 영역을 넘어서기 때문에 논리적 비약과 문법적 오류 등을 포함하곤 한다.
