1. Korean Wave Phenomenon
The Korean Wave is a phenomenon sweeping through Southeast Asia and China. Intensified by the sudden surge in Korea's national image brought on by the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the Korean Wave started with the rising popularity of Korean pop stars such as Ahn Jae-wook. More recently it extended to a boom in Korean-made TV dramas such as Winter Sonata and Autumn in My Heart, and movies such as JSA,

2. The flow of the Korean wave
The origin of the Korean wave(Hallyu) dates back to 1997, when "A Wish Upon A Star," a story of a poor woman courted by two wealthy men, was broadcast by Phoenix TV in Hong Kong and its popularity extended into China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. In two years after Korean TV drama had been exported to China, Korea had exported Korean popular songs to China and Korean public culture had started becoming popular in China. The term of Korean wave(Hallyu) was made by Chinese media in February, 2002 to express the fever of excitement about Korean culture in China. And then the popularity of Korean public culture extended into Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines etc throughout the Southeast Asia. Especially since 2000 the boom has gone from Korean dramas, songs, movies themselves to food, ‘Kimchi’, fashion, computer games, and household appliances all things that appear in Korean drama. We can call these entire phenomena Korean wave. The Korean fever reached its peak in Japan this year, where "Winter Sonata," produced in 2002, became a nationwide hit and was broadcast by NHK and several other television stations.
