Opinions are split when it comes to the state of nature. It is insisted that the state of nature constitutes the PD game. In the state of nature, individuals act in such a way that the result is just a war, since the state of nature, the war, by definition, is a non-cooperative situation. Individuals find themselves in the prisoner"s dilemma game. Thus, the prisoner"s dilemma game situation is the only model that Hobbes must have assumed obtains. However, this interpretation is not satisfying since it is based only on a statistical analysis of the state of nature. Dynamic explanations should be provided, to get apprehend the state of nature.
On the other hand, some Hobbesian commentators do not agree with game theoretic analysis of the state of nature. They do not regard the state of nature as the situation in which rational isolated individuals are in the prisoner"s dilemma. They contend that rational individuals in the state of nature are not isolated, so they are able to escape from the prisoner"s dilemma by communicating. The commentators contentions are misleading.
The purpose of this paper is to examine these opinions, as well as Hobbes"s theory of the state of nature. Hobbes"s theory of the state of nature is static, and I cast doubt on this. According to a statistical analysis, it is rational for any individual to choose the non-cooperative strategy. However, according to a dynamic analysis, the equilibrium might be different. Finally, I criticize Hobbes"s logical inference of the state of nature from a conception of human nature. |

사회계약론적 전통에서 ‘자연상태’에 대한 이해는 엇갈린다. 그것은 실제로 존재했을 것으로 여겨지는가 하면, 단지 사회계약의 성립을 위한 논리적인 전제로 가정되기도 한다. 어떤 경우에 그것은 폭력으로 점철된 전쟁상태로 그려지는가 하면, 또 다른 경우에는 평화로운 상태로 그려지기도 한다. 그것은 실제로 정부가 존재하지 않게 될 때 예상되는 무질서한 상태로서 현대에서도 발생할 수 있는 것이라고 주장되는가 하면, 인류역사에서 그와 비슷한 상태는 존재한 적도 없다고 비판되기도 한다. 홉스의 자연상태는 이러한 논란의 중심에 있다.
