1945년 11월 23일 일어난 신의주 학생사건은, 당시 38선 이남에는 뒤늦게 알려졌지만 이후 해마다 기념되고 반복적으로 의미화되었던 ‘사후적’ 사건이었다. 또 많은 서북인들의 월남의 계기가 됨으로써 남한 내 반공세력의 형성에도 영향을 미쳤다는 점에서 ‘기원적’ 사건이기도 하다. 이 사건의 다층적 의미는 신문이나 문학에서 이 사건을 재현해 온 방식과 그 편차를 통해서도 확인해볼 수 있다.
신문에 나타난 신의주 학생사건의 표상화 방식은 당대 반공 담론의 양상이 변화함에 따라 미묘하게 달라진다. 이 사건은 당시 희생된 아들의 유해와 함께 38선을 넘은 어머니의 사연을 통해 처음 이남에 전해졌으며, 대중에게 강렬한 공유기억으로 자리잡게 된다. 1950년대에는 신의주 학생사건이 동유럽에 앞선 세계 최초의 반소봉기라는 사실이 자주 언급되었다. 신의주 학생사건 기념일이 ‘반공학생의 날’로 지정되었고, 기념일마다 어김없이 실리곤 했던 사설들은 학생들을 반공의 투사로 호명하였다. 한편 1960년 4․19 이후에는 3.1운동과 광주학생운동, 그리고 신의주 학생사건과 ‘4․19 의거’를 ‘학생의거’로 묶어 면면히 이어져 온 학생들의 애국정신을 기리는 내용의 사설이 실리곤 하였다. 여기에는 4․19를 ‘의거화’하며 혁명의 의미를 축소하고자 하는 의도가 반영되었다.
한편 신의주 학생사건에 대한 소설적 재현의 사례들은 다른 각도에서 이 사건을 형상화하고 있다. 서사 안에서 신의주 학생사건은 주로 소설 속 인물이 월남하게 되는 결정적 계기로 등장한다. 그리고 이 인물들은 월남을 전후하여 모종의 역사적 아이러니에 직면하게 된다. 이처럼 신의주 학생사건을 다룬 소설들은 이 사건을 통하여 균열 없이 매끈한 ‘반공학생’이라는 이상적 주체가 아니라 자기 몫의 역사적 아이러니를 감당하는 현실적 주체의 모습을 형상화함으로써 신문과는 다른 서사적 감각을 드러내고 있다. |

The Shinuiju student incident, which took place on November 23, 1945, was an event that was reported, interpreted and commemorated in hindsight in the south of the 38th parallel. It was a multi-meaning and meaningful event that influenced the formation of anti-communist discourse. In addition, newspaper articles and editorials on the incident are examples of anti-communist campaigns and the representations of young anti-communists.
The Shinuiju student incident, which appeared in the newspaper, changed the shape as the keynote of anti-communist discourse was varied by times. M eaning of the incident was also changed, as anti-Soviet struggles that promoted in the 1950s, and as fostering economy and winning over communists in the 1960s. The commemoration of the event provides a meaningful example of how newspapers create the effects of anti-communist nationalization.
Meanwhile, the examples of the fictional representation of the Sinuiju student incident are approached from a different point of view. In the short stories and the novel, the main characters take this Shinuiju case as a decisive opportunity and decide to defect to South Korea. And before and after crossing the border, the figures face a situation of some kind of historical irony in common. As such, fictions on the incident depict realistic subjects that are not completely idealistic, such as the anti-communist subject that newspapers reproduce, but also take notice on their own historical irony and internal conflict. |
