Literary elements that are shown in Schumann`s work can be seen as the influence from jean Paul, a German writer. [Carnaval op.9] is a typical work, and it can be seen that jean Paul`s influence is the biggest in No. 9 movement ``Sphinx``, which possesses morphological ambiguity of an impossible performance. When it comes to understanding Sphinx, having the basis of Jean Paul`s literary characteristics is in keeping with literary approach for Schumann`s subjective music, and that is believed to be something that possesses sufficient research values. As for the first step of research, descriptions of Jean Paul`s literary characteristics take place and that is followed by interpretations of ``Sphinx`` movement, and they are divided into morphological meanings, background, and interpreting meanings as the title. Jean Paul`s literary characteristics can be arranged into 6 types of scrappiness, breakaway, allusion and riddle, citation, satire and humor and contrasting double character structure. Also, it can be seen that Schumann`s personal love life story is inherent from the fact that Sphinx suggests ASCH -the work`s theme- and ASCH is the village where couples who broke up live in. Sphinx`s morphological ambiguity leads to the image of Sphinx as the title -the legendary animal that sets a puzzle. Schumann wanted to suggest his personal story in Sphinx, and used the method of ambiguity -hints and riddles- for an effective expression of this intention. This stems from Jean Paul`s literary characteristics, and Sphinx becomes a good example of the integration between Schumann`s music and literature. Through this study, Jean Paul`s effect on Schumann`s music was confirmed, and it was discovered how literature was integrated into Schumann music. Furthermore, this study suggests a new direction for in-depth approach of Schumann music.
