The regional integration processes in Asia and Europe have been generally considered different in nature and practice. Whereas European regionalism is seen as highly institutionalised through a set of binding treaties enforced by a massive bureaucracy, regionalism in East Asia is seen as the outcome of free market forces bringing closer economic interaction and interdependence, rather than by institutions and binding treaties. Correspondingly there is a dichotomy in International Relations regionalism theory between Rationalist and Ideational approaches to regionalism in Asia and Europe. Whilst ontological and epistemological differences between these are so fundamental that a synthesis is unlikely, this article argues that the dichotomy may become somewhat breached and a level of convergence may emerge due to the evolution of regionalism in these regions.
