With the rise of China and the decline of Japan coupled with Washington`s renewed interest in the Asia-Pacific region as a growth center, economic integration is accelerating through the formation of FTA/EPA networks which may or may not lead to an EU-style economic union. Japan, which lags behind South Korea in an EPA network buildup, is increasingly leaning toward the U.S.-led TPP, apparently away from the China-led 16-nation East Asia Community plans, following its recent spat with China over the Senkaku Islands. This paper aims to clarify reasons behind Tokyo`s current enthusiasm about the expanded TPP after shedding light on the present state of Asian regionalism configuration. The paper concludes that the ultimate form of economic integration in Asia and/or Pacific could be some kind of an overlapping loose arrangement involving both EAC and FTAAP institutionalwise over the long term.
