The purpose of this paper is to explain the Subject-Object Asymmetry (SOA) in raising constructions in terms of the phase-based EPP, The English subject and object raising demonstrates asymmetries in syntactic structures as well as in processing, I propose that Eckman (1977)`s SOA in processing is due to the structural SOA based on the contrast of TP and CP: subject raising is from a TP infinitive clause and object raising is from a CP infinitive clause, With this structural contrast, it is natural that the subject raising is more accessible than the object raising since a sentence which has a relatively small number of phases is easier to process in a cyclic Spell-Out system. In addition, utilizing the extended phase-based EPP and the hypothesis of the different levels of derivation for the EPP and Case, a possible account is provided for why the EPP is responsible for driving A-movement without resorting to Case. Case problems are solved in the hypothesis of the independent components of Case and the EPP: the EPP applies at all phase levels in narrow syntax, but Case checking is not involved at the intermediate phase levels, and occurs only once at its "final" Transfer/Spell-Out. As a result, the phase-based EPP drives A-movement as a property of (internal) Merge in narrow syntax, requiring a DP to occupy Spec-T and Spec-V by C-T/v*-V feature inheritance of phase heads, C and v.
