If the uncertainty of war increases in the future, the necessity of a nation to have the strategic reserve will increase. The nation should accomplish the final success in war not through the cumulation of tactical successes but through a few strategic and decisive success. South Korea is supposed to retake the operational control of its armed forces on December 1, 2015 from ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command and cannot depend on US. augmentation any more. This paper reviewed three options for the South Korean strategic reserve. It concluded that designating South Korean Marine Corps as its strategic reserve will be the best option. South Korea is surrounded by the sea and its Marine Corps is believed to have most appropriate characteristics for the peninsula. It will not be easy to reinforce the Marine Corpse as the real strategic reserve. Most of all, South Korean Marine Corps soldiers should dearly recognize the meaning and importance of the mission and to do their best to hay the necessary capabilities for the mission. The division, which is providing security to the frontal area may need to hand over that mission to the Army, re-assemble at the rear area to be trained as the strategic reserve. The Marine Corps should able to cooperate more closely with South Korean Army, Navy and Air Force and the US. Marine Corps. It will be an important step, if South Korea designates Marine Corp as its strategic reserve. However, making the real and meaning strategic reserve will be very difficult and takes lots of time and substantial financial investment.
