This paper elaborates upon the insights of William Wordsworth`s use of the epitaph as a poetic text in order to develop and demonstrate his poetics and establish his authorial stance in relation to readers` acceptance and community. This study starts with the premise that he is so conscious of the rapid expansion of the contemporary readers and his literary condition representing his sense of isolation between reading public and author. He uses a form of address calling out the unknown individual reader "stranger" to participate in his/her solitary reading of epitaph as a text. The author has no personal contact with this imagined reader who has no bearing on the local communities or places to which the epitaph is related. As he explains in his "Essays upon Epitaphs," his interest in the epitaph mode reflects his eagerness to find or imagine sympathetic audiences in his contemporary society. He wishes to symbolically compensate for his sense of isolation between reading public and author. In the process of forming the basis of sympathy and community with reading public through the epitaphic mode, he is capable of transforming the meaning of the epitaph-text from the tragic version to the comic vision.
