예술 작품과 해석에 관한 마골리스의 이론은 반토대론/프래그머티즘에 기반한 상대주의이다. 고정된 실재보다 유동성을 강조하는 그의 입장은 분석 미학의 전통 내에서 역사적/맥락적 요소들을 강조한다. 그의 상대주의는 해석적 진술상의 이치 논리와 배중률을 거부하고 비수렴적인 해석들을 인정하며, 예술 작품은 문화적으로 창발된 개체로서 물리적인 속성과 함께 지향적인 속성을 가진다. 이것은 해석적 변화를 수용하며 행위의 측면을 강조한다. 마골리스의 입장은 해석적 단원론을 지지하는 전통적인 작품 중심 미학과 해석의 무한한 자유를 옹호하는 급진적 이론의 중간 지점에 있으면서, 해석적 변화에 대처하면서 안정된 기준과 비평적 다양성을 수용하려는 것이다. 그의 이론의 구성주의/부과주의적 경향은 지향적 속성의 비결정성과 맞물리면서 해석상의 안정된 기준에 대한 요구가 상대적으로 부각된다. 이에 대해 이 글은 역사주의적 측면 및 의도의 역할을 검토한다. 이 두 가지는 마골리스 이론 내에 무리 없이 수용되면서 해석적 안정성과 제한들, 해석적 다양성의 보장 문제에 대한 우려를 불식시켜 그의 구성주의적 해석 이론을 보다 만족스럽게 보완하며, 또한 공동체와 해석의 행위적 측면을 부각시켜 예술 작품과 해석에 대한 그의 이론을 전체적인 프래그머티즘의 맥락에서 보다 선명하게 조망할 수 있게 한다.
영문초록
On interpretation of artwork, Margolis` relativism is based on his anti-foundationalistic, Pragmatistic philosophy. In Analytic aesthetic tradition, his theory remarkably emphasizes the flux instead of fixed reality and historical/contextual aspects. His robust relativism rejects bivalence of interpretational statement and admits plural, non-convergent interpretations. He maintains that artworks are culturally emergent entities and have physical and Intentional properties indeterminately as to emphasize the act of interpretation. His stance locates between traditional singularism and radical pluralism and is to accommodate stable bases for interpretation and critical diversity. This essay notes his theory is constructive and imputational that needs to avoid being vacuous and circularity, and examines critical arguments concerning historicism and intention in interpretation as to show that his theory can contain relevant restrictions for interpretational stableness still allowing plural interpretations and alteration of properties through various interpretations and that notice of the act of interpreters as agents in relavant community can be understood well in his Pragmatic theory.
