In France, much dissonant effervescence about issues of colonialism came to the fore in 2005. That year began with the formation of the radical group ``Les Indigenes de la Republique, and ended with the banlieue rebellions of November 2005. February 2005 was also the year of the furor over the proposed parliamentary law calling for the ``positive accomplishments`` of French colonization. The proposed law was subsequently withdrawn but raised important issues about the public life of history. The formation and confrontation of two different historians` collectives, ``Comite de Vigilance Face aux Usages Publics de l`Histoire (Committee for Vigilance with regard to the Public Uses of History),` and ``Liberte pour l`Histoire (Liberty for History)`` reflected this importance. My purposes in this article are to address two confronting approaches to the role of historian in public life and suggest that behind the position of ``Liberte pour l`Histoire`` there would be strong fear of the fragmentation of French national identity. This fear can be linked to the subsequent controversial national identity politics of President Nicolas Sarkozy. (Institute of World and Global History, Ewah Womans University / kimywoo@gmail.com)
