James Cahill is recognized as one of the leading authorities on Chinese painting, His publications have laid the foundation for Chinese painting studies in the U.S. A. Close examination of the life and career of James Cahill is of great significance not only in knowing how he has led the field of Chinese painting studies as a leading scholar but also in understanding how the field has changed with theoretical turns and methodological shifts, In his early career, Cahill stalled his study of Chinese painting with stylistic analysis and documentation that were the dominant methodological concerns of the 1950s and 1960s. In the mid-1970s, Cahill began to investigate the socio-economic conditions under which paintings were produced, cir-culated, and used, Cahill paid more attention to the correlations between the socio-economic conditions of painters and the production of paintings. For Cahill, the different life-patterns and social status of painters were defining factors in regulating the styles and subject matters of paintings, The result was the publication of three of his major works, Hills beyond a River (1976), Parting at the Shore (1978), and The Distant Mountains (1982), that have had lasting influence on the field and have remained models books for students of Chinese painting, Aware of the problems of formalism, Cahill further developed his methodology in the socio-economic history of art, Drawing on the recent scholarship of Western art history on the socio-economic dimensions of art. Cahill was successful in articulating his arguments about how painters in traditional China worked and lived and how paintings functioned for various purposes, as demonstrated in his masterwork The Painter`s Practice (1994), In this book, Cahill explored issues of patronage, workshop practices, art markets, painter-client relationships, ghost-painters, uses of paintings, and the livelihoods of painters, issues that had never been treated seriously in Chinese painting studies, Cahill`s exploration of the hitherto unexplored issues played a crucial role in advancing the field that had been concerned with biographical studies of painters, stylistic analysis, and connoisseurship, The significance of Cahill`s scholarship is not limited to his methodological contributions to the field, He has led us 10 see more and think more about works of art from competing perspectives, For Cahill, there is always more than one way to understand works of art that are open to interpretation.
