This study was done to investigate the characteristics of decay reaction of perchlorate which was known to exist in surface waters even if little in concentration. For this purpose aqueous solutions of perchlorate were subjected to reactions for a week after being put into reactors which were conditioned as either aerobic or anaerobic. Formaldehyde is an another substance existing in surface water though little in amount. For the reactions under consideration formaldehyde is employed as an electron donor. The initial concentrations of both substances were controlled to be around 100 ugL-1. and the reactions were done at room temperature. It was found that the perchlorate had decayed with time and the decay reaction followed zeroth order reaction of which rate constant, k0, is 11.7 ㎍L-1d-1. Formaldehyde was also found to decay with time and to follow zeroth order reaction; the rate constants were, respectively, 0.98 ㎍L-1d-1 in aerobic condition and 0.66 ㎍L-1d-1 in anaerobic condition.
