century Nottingham, to illuminate the interrelations between urban space, population growth, and housing problems in a midland industrial city. It begins by posing a question about the peculiar pattern of population growth during the first half of the nineteenth century in Nottingham. The main factors affecting the formation and control of its urban space are analyzed, with emphasis on the enclosure question of the city. The background and outcomes of the failure to resolve the enclosure question is examined to a considerable extent. Also addressed are the characteristics of the subsequent suburbanization of Nottingham in that the unique pattern of the suburbanization emerged when the physical expansion of the town was hindered during a period of population growth and a growing demand for land. The paper then provides a more detailed description on the city`s housing problem, the back-to-backs in particular. An analysis and comparison of housing and urban space is also made between neighboring midland cities as well as other major industrial cities. Topics discussed are the construction of the interior and exterior of the back-to-backs including the court system, workshops within houses, density, cholera, and dressing-rooms among other dwelling problems. The paper attempts to illustrate the nature of urban space and housing in mid-nineteenth century Nottingham. It discusses the ways that urban space and housing influenced one another, and the extent to which they depicted various aspects of the city`s urbanization and people`s lives in it.
