국문초록
본 연구의 목적은 영어신문을 활용하여 학습자에게 읽기전략을 훈련시 켰을 경우, 학습자의 읽기능력과 태도에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보는데 있으며, 또한 영어신문을 활용하는 영어수업에 대해 영어 교사들은 어떻게 인식하고 있는지를 알아보는데 있다. 본 연구를 위해 상위반 48명, 하위반 48명으로 나누어 영어신문을 활용하여 읽기전략을 훈련시켰으며, 27명의 영어교사가 설문조사에 참여하였다. 연구 결과에 의하면, 상위반 학습자들은 읽기능력과 흥미 및 태도에서 하위반 학습다들에 비해서 긍정적인 효과를 보여주었다. 그리고 영어신문을 활용한 영어수업의 효과에 대한 평가와 관련하여, 상위반 학습자들은 수업 참여에 적극적이었으며 또한 수업의 효과에 대해서도 긍정적으로 평가하였다. 또한 설문조사에 참여한 영어교사의 50%이상이 영자신문을 활용한 교육은 읽기수업에 적용하는데 적합하다고 답변하였다. 영어교사들은 ENIE가 학습자측면애서 영어문법과 어휘능력 향상, 문화에 대한 이해, 학습자의 흥미와 참여유발과 같은 부분에 효과적이라고 평가하였다. 그러나 ENIE에 필요한 자료준비 시간 부족, 교과수업 진도에 부담을 ENIE활용의 어려운 이유로 지적하였다.
영문초록
The purposes of this study are to examine how the reading strategies training using English newspaper influence on learners′ reading ability and their attitude toward English class, and to explore how English teachers perceive English class using English newspaper. For this study, 27 English teachers were participated in the questionnaire, and 96 vocational high school students were divided into two groups according to their reading proficiency level; the lower group and upper group. Before and after the experiment, reading comprehension test was conducted. And the questionnaires examining students＇interest and attitude toward adopting ENIE in English class were administered after the experiment. As results of this study, followings were found. First, above 50% of English teachers answered that ENIE is a good way for teaching English reading, and above 60% of them answered they are willing to use ENIE in thee reading classes. English teachers also evaluated that using ENIE is an effective way to improve student＇ grammar and vocabulary ability, understanding of culture, and creating interest and motivation. But teachers say they are reluctant to apply ENIE due to lack of time preparing materials and burdens of teaching schedule. Second, by using ENIE in English class, students＇ English reading ability of the upper group learners was significantly improved. However, significant improvement of the lower group learners was significantly improved. However, significant improvement of the lower group learner` reading ability were not found. Third, the use of ENIE positively influenced on students＇ interest and motication for the upper group as well as lower group. In conclusion, the effect of using English newspapers in a reading class differs according to the different levels of learner proficiency. Different types of activities using English newspapers, therefore, should be developed appropriately for the both upper and lower level learners. Also, English teachers should be aware of the importance of ENIE and try to develop well-designed lesson plans the make the English class using ENIE successful.
