This paper had the attempt to confirm that the Chinese language speech sounds that were recorded in the Towasanyo(唐話纂要) which was the Chinese language primer during the 18th Century Edo Period in Japan were copied and transferred into the Japanese katagana system following the ancient Chinese language’s 36 vowels and consonant category system by dividing and recording them into Zhong chun yin(重脣音) and Qing chun yin(輕脣音) labial sounds. In addition, the study also confirmed that the 16 She(攝) of the ancient Chinese language sounds were also categorized and found to have been applied uniformly into corresponding katagana sounds. Based on this fact, we are able to surmise that Okajima Kanjan the author of the Towasanyo had an extensive knowledge and understanding about the sound system of the ancient Chinese language. Through the research conducted for this paper, confirmations were made that Towasanyo attempted to follow the ancient Chinese language’s 36 vowel and consonant system to a certain extent while trying its best to follow the realistic sounds as much as possible in terms of recording the phonemes.
