|The compound verb has profound meanings and particular grammatical characteristics in Japanese language. It is challenging for the foreign Japanese second language learners to understand the appropriate meanings of compound verbs in the context. Compound verbs are frequently used in many Japanese learning materials such as mass media, advertisement, literature, and sports. Therefore, it is necessary for the Japanese as a foreign language learners to acquire how to use compound verbs for the communication. Teachers of Japanese language need to consider how to teach compound verbs effectively, since these verbs are required to be in a separate category of grammar, direction for the polite and grammatical voice. This study is to suggest methods of applying illustration for teaching Japanese compound verbs. Japanese language education enables to take advantage of illustration as an efficient visual tool for teaching and learning compound verbs, although the use of illustration is still in the beginning stage.
