hwp이 책은 The Custom House으로 된 서문으로 시작한다. The Custom House는 서문일 뿐이다.
The book begins by explaining that Hester Prynne has committed adultery and has a child with a man that is not her husband. Hester will not tell who the father of this child (Pearl) is. As a punishment for her sin, she must stand on a scaffold and receive the insults of the people for three hours and she must wear a scarlet “A” on her bosom for the rest of her life as a symbol for her sin.
이 책은 Hester Prynne이 간음을 저질러 온 것과 그녀의 남편이 아닌 남자와 그의 아기를 가지고 있는 것을 설명함으로써 시작한다. Hester 은 그 아이 (펄)의 아버지가 누구인지 말하지 않는다. 그래서 그녀는 그녀의 죄의 대가로써 단두대 위에 서서 3시간동안 많은 사람들로부터 모욕을 당해야만 하고 또한 A라는 글자를 남은 일생동안 죄에 대한 징표로 그녀의 가슴에 달아야만 한다.
Hester was sent before to husband to Massachusetts. Her husband, however, never made it to Massachusetts and was assumed lost or dead on the Pacific. Hester found out this was not true when she saw her husband standing in the crowd watching her on the scaffold. Later, Hester’s husband (Roger Chillingworth) visits her in jail. Roger apologizes that he was late but explains that he was captured by Indians and held captive. He convinces Hester not to reveal that he is her long lost husband, but swear that he will find and seek revenge on the father of this baby.
Hester은 그녀의 남편보다 먼저 Messachusetts에 오게 되었다. 그러나 그녀의 남편은 오지 않았고 대서양에서 죽거나 실종된 것으로 생각되어졌다. 그러나 Hester은 이 사실이 진실이 아니라는 것을 그녀가 단두대 위에 서서 많은 사람들에서 속에 그녀를 보고 있는 남편을 보았을 때 알게 되었다. 후에 그녀의 남편 (Roger Chillingworth)은 감옥으로 그녀를 찾아간다. Roger은 그가 늦은 것에 대해 사과하고 자신이 인디언들에게 잡혀가서 감금되었었던 것을 설명한다. 그러나 그가 그녀의 아기와 그 아기의 아비에 대해 복수할 것에 대하여 분노한다.

Chapter 19
Both Hester and Dimmesdale watch Pearl approach. She is very lovely with her decorations of flowers and leaves. Dimmesdale was afraid that she would not like him, since other children were never very comfortable around him. Pearl however refuses to come when Hester calls her, and Hester realizes that she is unfamiliar to Pearl with her hair down and her letter gone. Pearl tells Hester to look down and find her letter. She then makes Hester go and get it. Once the letter is safely back on, her hair is in place, and she has the sad look on her face Pearl comes to them and kisses her mother and the letter. When Hester tells Pearl that Dimmesdalewill now be a part of their lives, Pearl asks if Dimmesdale will walk back to town with them, all holding hands. Hester tells her that he will not. at least not yet. Pearl would not warm towards Dimmesdale and when he kisses her forehead, she runs to the stream to wash it off.
사람이 드문 산속 시냇물 Hester은 가슴에 달린 주홍글씨를 잠시 떼고 Dimmesdale과 함께 펄이 뛰어 노는 것을 보면서 행복해 하지만 곧 다시 그 징표를 달아야 한다는 것에 좌절감을 느끼고 Dimmesdale은 자신을 낯설어하는 펄을 보며 서운해 한다.
