Background
The Human Genome Project 는 첫째로 human genome의 Draft Sequence를 다뤄왔다.
Producing this draft sequence는 Jigsaw Puzzle과 상당히 유사
3만개의 작은 DNA 조각이 서로 결합하여 Genome의 완전한 Sequence를 이루고 있다.
조각을 모으기 위해서 전세계에서 작업을 해야 한다.
DNA Sequence를 만들게 되면 EMBL과 Genbank같은 public domain에 올리게 된다.
The Jigsaw Puzzle Genome
Modern DNA sequencing technology can only determine accurate sequences of short stretches of DNA (less than 1000 base pairs). Since the human genome is in excess of 3 billion base pairs long, the genome has had to be sequenced in many small pieces that must be reassembled afterwards. The pieces are reassembled by comparing the sequence of the ends to find overlaps which can be used to join them together.
Ensembl은 EMBL-EBI 과 Sanger Center에서 Human Genome Sequence를 자동적으로 추적하기 위한 시스템을 발전시키고자 한 joint project
Ensembl:
Is “fed” raw DNA sequence taken from the public DNA databases
Puts it into a large tracking database (the “Ensembl” database) Joins the sequences into their proper place in the genome
Automatically finds genes and other features in the sequence
Presents the results on the internet for everyone to see, for free.
