During the time I was with eTEC working as a procurement associate, Jo was my mentor who was an assistant manager in the same department at that time. He taught me from general things such as the work procedure and the use of ERP system, to his know-how and laid-back work style. Because our cubicle desks were right next to each other, and we often worked on the same project, we became quite intimate, and I started to absorb his work style as if friends become alike. Back then, it has been only about six months since I started working at the company. So I was a little sensitive about my behaviors and performance. I would describe my attitude at that time quite uptight. And I tried to be perfect with my work and complete it as fast as possible, so that I can take on the next work. I held myself fully responsible for my work, and sometimes, even took others responsibility. I wanted to test how much pressure I can take on and also wanted to be very strict and professional. However, later I became stressful and realized I cant maintain my work style. That was the time when I started to watch how Jo handled his jobs. His work style was quite laidback. He never forgot to take his time out to have some coffee with colleagues, which I was never able to, and didnt worry much even when the work got tangled with an unexpected event. He almost always maintained "take-it-easy" attitude, but surprisingly, he had everything under his control fairly well. This story might be a little different from what the question expects, but he didnt voluntarily give me feedback. Rather, I asked him for it because I was shocked by and wanted to learn from his style which I felt the exact thing I needed. His "secret" was not really a secret. He just takes a step back and lets others and the time solve. And he concentrates on the tasks that need his immediate help. It was very simple, yet powerful. And I was shocked and even found it very bold thing to do. But he was right. Even if you want to handle everything, you just cant. Sometimes you lack authority, time or energy to deal with all. In such a case, I need to "use" others manpower to effectively address problems and deviate my energy to other matters that require my attention. This incident with Jo was unforgettable because it enabled me to release myself from stressful work style and handle things much more smoothly and efficiently.
