SOCIOLOGY 201
I am going to write about a disagreement between one of my best friends and me and using symbolic interaction and structural functionalism.
Before I came to the United States in 2008, I had lived in Korea. In Korea, I had a friend very close to me whose name is Dakyum Shim. We knew each other for ten years. On Mar, 2006, when I became 22, I served in the military for two years which is mandatory for all men over 18 in Korea. Dakyum didnt go to the army but postponed a few years instead. While I was in the army, Dakyum graduated a university in art major and left Korea to New York for his job. In 2008, I was discharged and came to New York for studying abroad. I told him about that, and we met at his house. Since he and I couldnt get in touch while I was serving in the military, we talked about what we had missed for hours. All of a sudden, he told me that he doesnt want to serve in the military. I could understand him. However, it is all Korean male citizens duty that no one can avoid. I told him, "You are not going into a battle field. You are just having a little different life for two years. And you know you cant avoid it. So, why dont you try to enjoy it." When I said that, his face looked like he just heard nonsense. Then, he said, "Ha! Yeah, right!" He was being sarcastic. He really didnt want to serve the duty. After a few days, he called me and said, "Hey! I got an idea!" He sounded like a person with full of joy. He told me that he can postpone the duty for five additional years and is going to get a US citizenship so that he doesnt have to worry about the duty. I couldnt believe him. I was very upset about him. That was such a stupid reason for changing ones citizenship. On top of that, six million Korean males are completing their duties, and he couldnt even be one of them. I almost yelled at him, "Are you crazy? This is not choosing what food you like to have! I mean this is about a citizenship for Christ sake! And you are willing to give up your citizenship just to avoid what you are supposed to do? Thats insanely childish! Do you realize you can only visit your family in Korea with a travelling visa which only lasts for a few months each time you file it if you give up your citizenship? What are you going to tell your family? And dont you have some sense of patriotism? Two years in the army? So what?! Every single man does that!" I was criticizing him. I thought that must have made him realize his decisions not right. And he was kind of accepting what I was telling him. So, I said to him, "Anyone can change hes citizenship, but the reason has to be a good one such as I found my true love to get married there, or I tried hard to live in my country, but it is a lot easier for me to live in the US but not I dont want to serve in the military for two years. And after all, youve been in the US only for two years. You dont even know this country." He answered, "Yeah, youre right. I dont even know this country that well. And it doesnt make sense if I change my citizenship for the reason." I perceived that as he is listening to me. So, I asked him, "Ok. So, when are you gonna go back for the service?" Then, surprisingly, he said, "After I try all I can to avoid the service." I was confused when I heard that. I thought I might have misunderstood him, so I told him about my opinion all over again to clarify him what Im saying. And again, he said I am right. But when I asked him whether he is going to serve in the military or not, he told me hes going to serve in it only if his "avoiding the duty plan" doesnt work. He agreed with what I told him but doesnt want to go to the army.
