Ⅰ. 문화(Culture)란 무엇인가?
문화연구는 최근의 학문으로 19세기 이후 생성되어 점점 의미가 넓어지고 있다. 영국 버밍엄의 Center for contemporary study of culture(Raymond Williams가 기여)에서 시작되어 1980년대 이후 크게 확산되었다. 그 이전의 culture의 개념은 Arnold의해 처음 생겨났고 이 교양이라는 이념은 빅토리아 시대에서 20세기 초반에 이르기까지 문학연구와 대학에서의 문학교육의 기본방향을 확립하는 데 결정적인 영향을 미쳤다.

1. Culture의 의미

1.1. General meaning
예) There are enormous cultural differences between Europe and Asia
생활방식, 사고방식, 가치 등 normal한 의미로 한 나라나 집단이 공유하는 문화.
1.2. 교양적인, 교육된
예) She is a cultured person.
1.3. Sub-culture
제한된, 특정한 작은 집단의 문화양식으로 옷, 언어, 이모티콘, 인터넷상의 언어
예)Pop music is often used by sub-cultures to assert their identity.
1.4. Mass culture
예) There is a danger that mass culture may destroy the values of our society.
1.5. Value system
예) This course will examine Victorian society and culture.
1.6. Shared meaning
대표적인 것이 언어로 body language, gesture.
예) Culture is the network of shared meaning in any society.
1.7. Distinctive culture
특별한 특정한 가치의 문화, 웰빙문화
예) McDonalds fosters a distinctive culture based on certain values.
