I. Introduction

In coursebook-based teaching, not in coursebook teaching, adaptation process is needed. Teaching a textbook is totally different from basing a course on a book. A textbook cannot and should not be a course itself in the sense that it controls the teacher and students and determines everything that is likely to happen in the classroom. A textbook is just a material that is needed to support an overall curriculum and provide a guideline to a teacher. Teachers should use them, not be controlled or overwhelmed by them. So at the selection, rejection, and replacement stage, teachers are required to exercise judgement concerning the extent to which and the way in which they use books. With their effort and careful consideration, coursebook-based teaching can be justified according to students’ needs and motivations.
Our group tried to make positive changes by adapting and supplementing to contribute to the aims of the course and needs of students. The textbook we chose is Doosan English Textbook for 2nd grade junior high school students. We adapted 4 tasks from this book and these tasks are something that must be ‘changed’ and ‘improved’ to attain intended goals for each task.
