2. Inhibition
ⓓ sets of defenses to protect one's ego
○ Meaningful L acquisition involves some degree of identity conflict
○ It is related to "Self-esteem" (Self-esteem↑ 󰁀 Inhibition↓)
Inhibition이란 자신의 ego를 보호하기 위한 방어기제(defenses)를 지칭하는데, 자신의 신념이나 느낌이 쉽게 깨지기 쉬운 청소년기에 많이 형성되고, 성인기까지 계속된다. 높은 self-esteem을 가진 사람은 inhibition이 낮다. 의미있는 언어습득은 어느정도의 정체성 충돌을 수반한다. 우리는 시도(trialling)와 실수(making errors)를 동해 언어를 습득하기 때문에 방어기제를 제거하는(낮추는) 것이 언어학습을 증진시킬 수 있다. Permeable(투과가능한)정도의 Inhibition이 필요하다(openness, vulnerability, ambiguity tolerance).

Risk-Taking은 성공적인 제2언어습득에 있어서 중요한 요소이다. 언어개념에 대한 덩어리들을 시도해보고 틀려보고 하면서 언어를 배워가기 때문이다. 하지만 Risk-Taking이 높다고해서 SLA에서 좋은결과만 나오는것은 아니다. 학습자는 accurate guess를 해야한다. Teacher는 받아들여질 수 있는 분위기를 조성해주어야한다. (climate of acceptance) 하지만 너무 심하게(overly high risk-takers with wild gambles) risk-taking 해서 수업을 방해시키는 애들은 길들여될 필요도 있다. (need to be tamed)
(비교적 영속적인 잘못된 패턴의 조합은 “risk-taking"을 하려는 의지의 부족으로 인해 Fossilizated 되기도한다)
