Schools are built to educate people and educating people costs money. Schools have to make money to get the school running. There are three ways to get money. Those three ways are getting money from government, raising tuition fee, and letting the students enter school by donating a lot of money. The first way which is getting money from the government can`t expect to be increased easily and is also very restricted. Raising tuition fee doesn`t help much either, because whenever the school tries to raise tuition fee, students make an opposition movement. So the school decided to pull out their last and hidden card, a donation-based admission system. in which some of the students are admitted to a university by donating a certain amount of funds. Since schools let students enter their schools by receiving money, money they are talking about is not the money we can easily see but only few people can see. A donation-based admission system means the rich can enter school not by their abilities but by their money. Giving money to school can make the rich enter the school without any qualification. This doesn`t seem to make sense in a democratic country like Korea, but it has many good sides, too.
First of all, let`s look at the personal side. For example, let`s look at Yonsei University`s qualification, 2 billion won. When we first look on donator`s side, people who have enough money to give 2 billion won to let their children enter good school can decide whether to inherit their money to children or give money to school. When they inherit their money, the taxes are very high which is about 40~50%. So this means that when rich people inherit money to their children, children can only have 1 or 1.2 billion won in their hands. Now they have to choose between two selections, inheritance or donation-based admission system.
