The media had enormous power over people. The Television shows and movies we watch highly influence us. It can even modify our way of thinking and behavior. For example, in the 1980’s masculine men were constantly shown on advertisements with a cigar. Therefore, the majority of people obtained the concept that if you are a real man you should smoke. As a result the number of smokers rapidly grew. The media is now banning scenes that show people smoking as a late remedy to decrease the social problem of increasing smokers. The influence of technology is getting bigger. It is not only influencing us but also penetrating into our daily lives. The film The Truman Show and Blade Runner dramatically describes the relationship between human beings and technology. The Truman Show is a movie that shows the main character, Truman, in a reality show that he does not even know he is in! Truman was adopted from the day he was born from a television production company. His life is built around false things and everyone except Truman, are actually actors. As Truman grows he becomes suspicious and finally realizes that he is part of a popular reality show. Blade Runner is about advanced robots called replicants created by the Tyrell Company. Replicants are made to work as slaves on the ‘off-world’ that is a place outside of Earth. However, six of the most advanced model of replicants called ‘Nexus 6’ come down to Earth and fight for a longer life span. The main character Deckard, is suppose to kill all of the replicants before they cause huge chaos on Earth. By comparing and contrasting the two films I am going to write about the similarities and differences of the movie. Also, I am going to illustrate how the two films are pessimistic and lastly, discuss about how to maintain our humanity with technology.
