The dominant style of woodblock prints in Edo period in Japan, also known as ‘Ukiyo-e’ is represented as one of the most remarkable printed image of art history that itself has made an important contribution to expanding the expressive potential of the woodblock print as a medium. Ukiyo-e also has long fascinated people all over the world and influenced many Western artists in the 19th century, particularly impressionistic artists, including Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh. This paper will discuss and analyze the fascinating relationship of eastern art to western art in examples of Ukiyo-e influence in western art.
