I. Introduction
i. Industry
Toy industries are generally divided into three major categories, which are traditional toys, video games, and casino games and accessories. According to the statistics, there were 6,296 manufacturers of traditional toys in 2007 in the United States, and Mattel Inc and Hasbro Inc are the main representatives of this industry category. Unfortunately, as the world has been developing and turning into a more digital and technological era, traditional toy industries have been facing big pressure from the fast-growing video game industry. Traditional toy industry has not been growing efficiently, while the other video game industry and casino games industry (mostly video game industry) have been obtaining consumer attention. Video game industry has especially been proliferating, as its year 2007 revenue was 51.2% higher than its year 2006 revenue. In contrast, traditional toy industry’s revenue in 2007 was $1.1 billion lower compared to revenue in 2006. As technology is quickly seizing and dominating the present world, traditional toy companies have been trying to relate their products and extend their core brands through strategic alliance with several digital and technological industries.
The major traditional toy companies are Mattel (MAT), Hasbro (HAS), JAKKS Pacific (JAKK), Russ Berrie and Company (RUS), RC2 (RCRC), Action Products International (APII), and Corgi International (CRGI).

ii. Hasbro Inc.

Hasbro Inc. is the United States’ second largest worldwide toy company with 2007 revenue of $3.84 billion and net income of $333 million. Hasbro Inc. designs, manufactures, and markets a variety of game products and toys targeted to kids, families, board gamers, and educational toy consumers. Hasbro Inc. has succeeded globally, and the company owns the largest market share in the board game industry as of 2007, producing popular board games such as Clue, Monopoly, and Scrabble. What is more, they possess quality brands such as Playskool, Transformers, and Littlest Pet Shop, etc. The company also is the parent to several widely known subsidiaries like Kenner, Milton Bradley, and Playskool, etc. The company’s working capital needs are primarily generated by cash generated from operations, and if necessary, proceeds from short-term borrowings and accounts receivable securitization program. The company’s two major product lines are in the United States and Canada, and in international market. In addition to these two primary segments, Global Operations segment, and other segment are also present, where manufacturing and sourcing production are involved. Hasbro Inc’s objective is to increase its operating profits by working on brand awareness by expanding its brands through entertainment, and digital, and also by innovating and developing new products for continuous selling and marketing. iii. Mattel Inc.

Mattel Inc. is the world’s largest toy company with 2007 revenue of $5.97 billion and net income of $600.0 million. Mattel Inc. designs, manufactures, and markets various toy products worldwide, and they are sold mostly through third party retailers (half of their sales come from outside the United States). The company was incorporated in California in 1948 and reincorporated in Delaware in 1968. Mattel’s business segments are divided into two according to the geographic basis: domestic and international. The products produced from this company include Barbie, Matchbox, Fischer Price, and Hot Wheels. Barbie was extremely successful, taking up about 80% of Mattel’s profits. The company also is the parent to several subsidiaries located in Delaware, Hong Kong, and The Netherlands, etc. Mattel Inc’s focus is to improve the profitability and cash flows of the company through its business, and this is achieved by improving existing toys, globalizing the brands, extending the brands into new areas, create new brands, and improve production efficiency.
