In 21st century, the world has changed a lot and so as people. However, people’s desire to learn and their interests on education are still very high. People want to learn new skills and knowledge that can help them to live a better life. Nevertheless, the way of getting knowledge and learn new skills has changed a bit. In the past, people were so used to go to school or extra-curriculum academies to obtain new knowledge and skills. People are still going to school and academies to obtain useful knowledge, but some other ways are also very popular among younger people. They are learning new knowledge through the internet by on-line lecture or TV lectures. Also, people can learn new knowledge and skills from everywhere, because new technology has been developed. There are portable machines that allow people to access to learning environment anywhere they are. However, have you ever heard that people are now learning new knowledge and skills through playing computer games? Since the past, many people easily misunderstood that ‘games’ are only for young kids to play during their free time. However, ‘Game businesses’ grew into huge industry as computer industry develops, and now it became an enjoyment culture for everyone from young children to adults. Among the numerous kinds of games, new types of games are introduced in a game industry which are called ‘functional games’. These ‘functional games’ are used as learning tools for people to learn various skills and knowledge. It is called ‘G-learning project’ and few games are selected and proved that it has great effects on people to learn various knowledge and skills. In this report, we are going to select three games that are popular among people in diverse ages and find out how these games influence language learning. Carefully chosen games are called ‘Hanjamaru’, ‘Nintendo DS TOEIC’ and ‘Audition English’. We can find various kinds of learning effects from the research, but we are going to focus on the concepts from Chapter 6 of a book ‘Principles of Language Learning and Teaching ’, which is about ‘Personality Factors’.
First of all, we are going to look at ‘Audition English’. In ‘Audition English’, a user can become a part of character in this game and listen to and talk in English while playing the game. This game contains useful conversations that can be used in everyday life. This game consists of various kinds of episode from everyday’s life and players can read English sentences and talk in English using a microphone connected to the computer. The players can grow their self-esteem and confidences in English conversation by talk and repeat English sentences in several times. Especially, ‘Audition English’ can make up for the weak points that are related to ‘risk-taking’. According to the book ‘Risk-taking’ is an important characteristic of successful learning of a second language. Therefore, learners have to be able to gamble a bit, to be willing to try out hunches about the language and take the risk of risk taking both in the classroom and in natural settings. Individuals learning a second language can face other negative consequences if they make mistakes. Beebe(1983, p.40) described some of the negative ramifications that foster fear of risk taking both in the classroom and in natural settings. It is not dau
