레티놀은 노화를 예방하는 약용크림이나 여드름 치료제로 개발되기 시작해 1990년대 초 활발한 연구를 진행한 끝에 화장품 성분으로 사용되기 시작했다. 특히 이 레티놀 성분의 기술개발로 국내외 화장품 산업의 큰 발전이 이뤄졌다.
