▣ Overview
The number of Korean emigration doubled in 1980s and a lot of them settled in USA. Even though they started to live in the US, the Korean atmosphere affected by Confucianism still existed within the household. Korean housewives living in the US had been watching Korean soap opera still, gathering at home, and renting out the video tape from the shop. These wives' soap opera viewing has long been disregarded by their husbands. In spite of this, Korean housewives kept watching soap operas alone or together with peers.
These Korean housewives living abroad are more easily exposed to US soap operas but why are they insisting on watching Korean dramas? In order to explain such interesting phenomenon, we will first uncover the characteristics of Korean housewives. And then we will be looking at some factors that make them prefer their own cultural media product over American ones as well as the reasons why they enjoy watching the dramas together and what they derive from it. We will also be looking at some current situations on phenomenon and compare it with the ones from the past.
▣ The Characteristics of Korean Housewives.
In agriculture studies, the word "housewife" is occasionally used referring to the person who does the majority of the chores within a farm's compound, as opposed to field and livestock work.
From the periods of the Chosun dynasty, Korean women were bound to homemaking by the doctrines of Confucianism and cultural norms. In most cases, it was the husband’s role to work while it was forbidden for wife to take a job. So, the Korean wives mainly spent their days at home doing other domestic tasks. As Confucianism spread across East Asia, this social norm was also observed in China, Japan, and Vietnam.
