Flow around and through fish gills

Abstract. An overall view of the flow over the fish gills is first described by using the active pump system and the passive ram ventilation. The concept of ram ventilation is introduced and its merits of reducing hydrodynamic drags and efficient energy consumptions are described. The specific flow through the gills, from its mouth to the gill exit, is viewed and the interlamellar flows are expressed by using the internal flow model. Measurement of the gills dimensional property will indicate that transition to turbulent is unlikely and the flow remains laminar.

Introduction

Respirators like bony fish, sharks and tunas have wide speed spectrum ranging from nearly zero to 120 kilometers per hour. However, these respirators are capable to remain the flow ‘laminar’ that passes through their gill slits. These abilities to remain ‘laminar’ are explained throughout this paper and it will be shown by the case of a Skipjack Tuna. Equations that are developed from the basic interflow of fluid dynamics are also used for the rectangular tube figure of secondary lamellae.
